July 15, 2024
I am pleased to announce that the Government of Canada, on behalf of the Honourable Dan Vandal, Minister of Northern Affairs, PrairiesCan and CanNor, is investing nearly $800,000 to bolster the Yukon tourism sector. This funding will empower seven businesses and organizations to introduce new programs, enhance visitor experiences, expand overnight accommodations, improve accessibility, and transition organizations to sustainable energy solutions. MacBride Museum – Building Audiences CanNor is contributing up to $250,000 over three years to support MacBride Museum in Whitehorse. This investment will enable MacBride Museum to develop and launch a series of innovative programs and events aimed at attracting new audiences year-round. Founded in 1950, MacBride Museum plays a crucial role in preserving and sharing Yukon’s rich history through its exhibits, artifacts, and stories. Grayling Camp Enterprises – Off-Grid Solar Power System CanNor’s investment of up to $192,500 in Grayling Camp Enterprises will facilitate the installation of an off-grid solar power system at Dalton Trail Lodge. Located in Kluane National Park and in operation since 1987, Dalton Trail Lodge caters primarily to international tourists. This initiative will significantly reduce the lodge’s reliance on fossil fuels, reinforcing its commitment to eco-tourism and sustainability. Northern Nomad Outdoors & Yoga – Cardinal Camp Wellness on the Land Northern Nomad Outdoors & Yoga (NNOY), an Indigenous, woman-owned eco-tourism business established in 2007, will receive up to $99,999 over three years from CanNor. This funding will support NNOY in expanding its tourism infrastructure and offering land-based experiences in Mendenhall, Yukon, focusing on sustainable tourism and outdoor adventures. Klondike Visitors Association – Accessible Dawson Pilot Project CanNor is allocating up to $99,999 to the Klondike Visitors Association (KVA) for a two-year $153,799 pilot project aimed at enhancing accessibility in Dawson. The project will implement short- and medium-term solutions to accommodate visitors with diverse accessibility needs, ensuring Dawson becomes more inclusive and welcoming to all. Cabins Over Crag Lake – Tourism Experience Development CanNor’s support of up to $99,000 will enable Cabins Over Crag Lake to expand its overnight accommodation capacity, establish event and arts programming spaces, and enhance campground facilities over the next two years. Located near Carcross, Cabins Over Crag Lake is set to enrich the visitor experience and attract more tourists to the region. Carmacks Development Corporation – Yukon Bunkies Eco-Conscious Lodging The Carmacks Development Corporation will receive up to $28,424 from CanNor to acquire two eco-friendly prefabricated bunkhouses, addressing the region’s shortage of short-term accommodations. This project aims to attract environmentally conscious travelers, enhancing Carmacks’ appeal as a tourism destination during peak seasons. Yukon Wildlife Preserve – Winter Tourism Expansion CanNor has allocated up to $21,087 to the Yukon Wildlife Preserve for a one-year $37,656 project. This funding will support the purchase of 11 fat bikes and equipment for a rental program, as well as an insulated wall tent to enhance visitor comfort during tours of the 350-acre preserve. Established in 2004, the Yukon Wildlife Preserve offers a unique opportunity to observe Yukon’s wildlife in their natural habitats while promoting conservation and education. These initiatives underscore our commitment to advancing Yukon’s tourism sector, fostering sustainability, and ensuring memorable experiences for visitors from around the world.
