July 22, 2024
I am pleased to announce that the federal government has allocated over $13 million in funding through the Affordable Housing Fund (AHF), aimed at supporting the construction and repair of 274 affordable homes across communities across the Yukon. The announcement, held at 67A Jackson Street in Dakwäkäda (Haines Junction), signifies a significant step towards improving housing conditions. These funds will directly benefit several communities, including repairs and renovations currently underway on homes in Dakwäkäda. This funding includes: $1.6 million was designated for repairs to 108 units for members of Champagne and Aishihik First Nations in Haines Junction. $8.9 million was allocated for the construction of 13 new single-family homes and $120,000 for repairs to eight homes for members of Little Salmon Carmacks First Nation. $2.1 million earmarked for repairs to 141 homes for members of Tr'ondëk Hwëch'in First Nation. $548,400 to repair four apartments and 12 beds in Watson Lake, specifically for women and children fleeing violence. These initiatives are part of Canada's National Housing Strategy (NHS), a comprehensive $82+ billion plan aimed at providing housing solutions for Canadians in need. This strategy prioritizes vulnerable groups, including seniors, Indigenous Peoples, individuals experiencing or at risk of homelessness, and women and children facing violence.
